South of Granada
South of Granada is a resource for the geographic area directly south of the historic city of Granada, in Spain’s Andalucia. This encompasses Lecrin Valley, La Alpujarra, Sierra de Contraviesa and Costa Tropical.
Located on the south flanks of the Sierra Nevada, La Alpujarra is known for its terraced slopes with ‘acequias’ (water channels) irrigating the land, dating to Moorish times. A smaller range, the Contraviesa, lies between La Alpujarra and the Costa Tropical. With the azure blue of the med in the background, this area is rich with almond and grape crops, overlooking a coastline that isn’t over-developed. Here, you’ll find tranquil towns and fishing villages with quiet beaches.
This whole area is renowned for its ‘tapas’, which is provided as a free gift in bars and restaurants, with qualifying drinks. Whether you choose ‘cerveza’, ‘vino’ or a soft drink, small portions of the area’s favourite fayre will be served to you.
